Shang-Chi, Maestro del Kung Fu: Chronocomix

Kung-Fu fighting

Uno dei fenomeni più interessanti nel panorama internazionale di cinema & costume dei primissimi anni ’70 fu l’esportazione della cinematografia asiatica in Occidente: il cosiddetto Wuxiapian (letteralmente: Storie di Guerrieri Erranti), in parte paragonabile ai film di "cappa e spada", era un genere prettamente asiatico che aveva come protagonisti eroi epici della tradizione cinese, come spadaccini volanti, guerrieri o maestri di arti marziali. La distribuzione all'estero di questo genere cinematografico, inedito in Occidente, ebbe un enorme successo, avendo come punta di diamante l’attore/personaggio di culto Bruce Lee, con una crescente richiesta di film a base di Kung Fu e combattimenti a mani nude che impose, tanto in America quanto in Europa, soprattutto nelle generazioni più giovani, un febbrile interesse per le discipline di combattimento orientali: il Judo, il Karate, il Kung Fu, il Ju-Jitsu, il Wushu.
Negli USA, una casa editrice all’avanguardia come la Marvel Comics (responsabile, tra l’altro, della creazione dei primi supereroi di colore come Pantera Nera, Blade e Luke Cage), particolarmente attenta alle mode ed ai generi di maggior interesse, non si fece scappare l’occasione di esplorare un nuovo genere narrativo di così grande successo, proponendo il suo primo personaggio di origine e connotazione asiatica: Shang-Chi, Maestro del Kung Fu.

Ispirato alla figura di Bruce Lee e creato da Steve Englehart (testi) e da Jim Starlin (disegni), il personaggio esordì nel dicembre del 1973 sulla rivista antologica Special Marvel Edition n.15 e, dopo un periodo di rodaggio sulla testata corale Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu, conquistò nel settembre del 1974 una propria serie regolare intitolata Master of Kung Fu.
Shang-Chi è un guerriero esperto in Kung Fu e nel Wushu che, attraverso le arti marziali e i duri allenamenti al quale fu sottoposto fin dalla più tenera età, ha raggiunto la perfezione fisica e mentale, con piena padronanza delle sue letali abilità di combattimento. Non ha superpoteri, ma le sue capacità sono superiori ai normali parametri fisici umani, ampliate anche dall’uso di molte armi tipiche dei ninja come la spada, i bastoni kali e nunchaku, oltre ai dardi da lancio shuriken.
Cresciuto ed addestrato nella fortezza di Hunan, in Cina, Shang-Chi viene drammaticamente a conoscenza che il padre Fu Manchu (famoso personaggio dei romanzi Pulp degli anni ’30 e ’40) è a capo di un impero del crimine e che lo ha allevato con l’unico obiettivo di farlo divenire l’assassino perfetto. Con la scoperta della vera identità del padre, Shang-Chi fugge dalla Cina e, con l’obiettivo di fermarlo, entra a far parte dei servizi segreti britannici.
Fin dal suo primo episodio, la serie propose ai lettori un mix narrativo di più generi: dagli esotici action di arti marziali alla spy-story inglese, dall’hard boiled alle atmosfere criminal-urbane della black-exposition cinematografica degli anni ’70 (storie del sottobosco criminale afroamericano, con duri e donne discinte), condite in salsa orientale. I primi episodi furono scritti da Steve Englehart, al quale subentrò il poliedrico, quanto ingiustamente sottovalutato, Doug Moench, mentre vari artisti si alternarono ai disegni: da un Keith Pollard acerbo e scolastico ad un evocativo Rudy Nebres, fino a Paul Gulacy, l’artista che caratterizzò più di tutti il personaggio riuscendone a cogliere in misura maggiore rispetto ad altri l’essenza e le atmosfere esotico-avventurose attraverso progressivi esperimenti di costruzione di tavole psichedeliche e pop di grande originalità e potenza narrativa.

In Italia la febbre dei film e delle discipline di combattimento orientali arrivò con qualche anno di ritardo rispetto agli USA, ovvero nella metà degli anni '70, ma l’interesse fu tale che anche Luciano Secchi con la sua Edizioni Corno – all’epoca unico licenziatario del materiale Marvel nel nostro Paese – si convinse a pubblicare una testata interamente dedicata a Shang-Chi, la quale esordì nel maggio del 1975 in un formato inusuale: molto più grande dei normali giornalini di supereroi (21x27 cm.) e con stampa in bianco e nero.
Secondo la moda editoriale dell’epoca, l’albo Shang-Chi, Maestro del Kung Fu aveva foliazione di 48 pagine e cadenza quindicinale al prezzo di 300 lire; nel corso dei suoi 54 numeri (chiuse i battenti nel novembre del 1979), propose una scaletta quasi totalmente omogenea per tematiche e genere, composta dalle serie Master of Kung-Fu, Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu, Iron Fist e gli episodi delle antologiche Special Marvel Edition e Marvel Premiere aventi per protagonisti guerrieri di arti marziali. Nei suoi ultimi numeri, la testata ospitò anche serie sui generis che avevano poco a che fare con le tematiche portanti di Shang-Chi, inserite molto probabilmente per penuria di materiale, quali Doctor Strange, Powerman e Dracula, quest’ultima rimasta orfana della sua testata sospesa qualche anno prima.

A riguardo dei personaggi comprimari di Shang-Chi, citiamo I Figli della Tigre: un gruppo di 4 giovani combattenti le cui abilità marziali erano amplificate da alcuni amuleti magici, le cui vicende si svolsero nell’omonima serie Sons of Tiger, apparsa all’interno dell’antologica Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu; i singoli episodi furono scritti da Gerry Conway, Denny O’Neil e Bill Mantlo, mentre ai disegni si alternarono Dick Giordano, Don Perlin e George Perez. La serie aveva toni marcatamente più supereroistici rispetto a quelli di Shang-Chi ed in essa fecero la loro prima apparizione personaggi come Iron Fist e La Tigre Bianca. Nel corso dei numeri, fu proprio Iron Fist a diventare comprimario fisso nella testata, esordendo con gli episodi apparsi su Marvel Premiere, firmati da vari Roy Thomas, Lein Wein, Tony Isabella e Doug Moench ai testi, con disegni di Gil Kane, Larry Hama e Arvell Jones. Fu poi pubblicata la serie regolare Iron Fist, importante sia perché fu uno dei migliori esempi di commistione supereroi/arti marziali, sia anche perché su di essa debuttò una delle coppie d’oro dei comics: Chris Claremont e John Byrne che, qualche anno dopo, furono titolari di una riuscitissima run di The Avengers e, soprattutto, del rilancio di Uncanny X-Men.

Shang-Chi, Maestro del Kung Fu rappresenta un manifesto a memoria di una certa era in Italia, segnata da un interesse per alcuni aspetti della Cina che, al di là dei fumetti in scaletta, veniva esplicata anche da un certo apporto redazionale, assente nella maggior parte delle pubblicazioni della Corno, con ad esempio articoli su gare e campioni italiani di Judo, sulla boxe thailandese e sui guerrieri malesi, con pubblicità di corsi e di libri sul Kung Fu, oltre a domande ed interventi in materia da parte dei lettori nell’angolo della posta, intitolata Kappa Effe.
