Intervista a Troy Brenna - Thor

Come sei entrato nel cast di Thor?

Mi è stato chiesto di entrare nel cast come stuntman, grazie alla mia corporatura (2,10 m e 124 kg). Dopo aver provato per un paio di settimane, ho ricevuto una chiamata per leggere una parte del film. Una settimana dopo aver fatto l'audizione per Kale, ho ricevuto una chiamata da Randi Hiller, il casting director. Mi disse per telefono che avevo ottenuto la parte come Kale.

Quanto tempo hai lavorato alla pellicola?

Ho iniziato a lavorare su Thor nell'ottobre del 2009. Abbiamo continuato a filmare e rifilmare fino a poco tempo fa, a febbraio 2011.

In interviste precedenti, attori e stunt ci hanno sottolineato della grande collaborazione avuta con il regista Kenneth Branagh e di come, il fatto che egli stesso sia un attore, abbia stimolato molti sul set. Quali sono state le tue impressioni a riguardo?

Personalmente, ho amato il modo in cui Kenneth Branagh ha diretto gli attori. Ha una passione tale, e una comprensione incredibile dei momenti a cui vanno incontro gli attori prima della cosiddetta "azione". È stato estremamente paziente, e non autoritario come molti altri registi. Un vero professionista.

Senza rivelarci troppo, puoi descriverci il livello di interazione del tuo personaggio con gli altri del cast?

La maggior parte delle mie interazioni con gli attori erano in realtà combattimenti. Praticamente sono stato picchiato da mezzo cast!
 

Come ti sei trovato a lavorare con un'attrice, recente premio Oscar, come Natalie Portman? Come è stata sul set?

Sfortunatamente non ho girato alcuna scena con Natalie Portman, ma da quel che ho sentito è fantastico lavorare con lei. Comunque, ho lavorato con un altro vincitore Oscar, Anthony Hopkins. Un vero gentiluomo.

Quali istruzioni ricevevi prima di girare una scena?

La maggior parte delle istruzioni che mi son state date riguardavano l'esser grosso, aggressivo e intimidatorio.

Oltre a essere un attore, sei anche uno stunt. Recentemente hai preso parte ad altri due film tratti da fumetti, Cowboys & Aliens e Priest. Cosa puoi dirci di queste due pellicole?

Cowboys & Aliens è stato divertentissimo, girato per la maggior parte su green screen o in motion capture. E' stato bello vedere la creatività del regista Jon Favreau all'opera. Il cast era pieno di talento e aspetto di vedere cosa ne uscirà.
Per quello che riguarda Priest, ho lavorato sull'allenamento. Il team di stunt ha allenato Paul Bettany, Maggie Q e Cam Gigandet, sulle arti marziali e sui cavi. Aspetto di vederlo sul grande schermo. Non so cosa posso dirvi su questi film che non mi metta nei casini. Mi spiace.

Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti?

Ho appena finito di lavorare sul pilot di Wonder Woman. Ancora una volta vengo battuto da una donna. Attualmente, poi, sono pronto per partire per il New Mexico per iniziare le riprese di The Avengers. Non vedo l'ora di mettere un altro film della Marvel Comics al mio repertorio!

How did you get into Thor's cast?

I was asked to come in as a stunt performer because of my size (6'9", 275lbs).  After rehearsing for a couple weeks, I received a call to go in and read for a part in the movie.  One week after auditioning for Kale, I got a call from Randi Hiller, the casting director.  She told me over the phone that I got the part as Kale.

How much time have you been working on the movie?

I began working on Thor in October of 09.  We continued to do pick up shots and reshoots all the way until just recently, Feb. 2011.

In previous interviews, actors and stunts stressed the great teamwork did with the movie director, Kenneth Branagh, and how being himself an actor, he animated many people on the set. Which have been your impressions about it?   

I personally loved the way Kenneth Branagh directed all the actors.  He had such passion and understanding of what a performer goes through moments before the call of "action".  He was extremely patient and not overbearing like so many directors can be.  Just a true professional.

Without telling us too much, could you describe the level of interaction of your character with the other ones from the cast?

Most of my interaction with other actors were to fight them.  I basically got my ass kicked by most of the cast.

How did you feel working with an actress, recent Oscar winner, as Natalie Portman? How was she on the set?

I unfortunately did not have any scenes with Natalie Portman, but from what I hear she is a gem to work with.  I did however work with the other Oscar Award winning actor, Anthony Hopkins.  What a true gentleman.

What kind of instructions did you get before starting a shot?

Most of the instruction given to me were to be large,  intimidating and  very aggressive. 

Besides being an actor, you are also a stunt. Recently you have taken part to other two movies drawn from comics, "Cowboys and Aliens" and "Priest". What can you tell us about these two movies?

Cowboys & Aliens was a lot of fun,  Mostly done on green screen and motion capture.  Director Jon Favreau was fun to watch his creativity at work.  Very talented cast and looking forward to see how it all turns out. 
As far as Priest goes, I worked on the training part of it.  The stunt team trained Paul Bettany, Maggie Q and Cam G., for all the wire work and martial arts. Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.  I dont know what I can tell you about these movies that wont get me in trouble.  sorry

Which are your next projects?

I just finished working on the pilot for "Wonder Woman".  Once again I get my but kicked by another woman.  I am now getting ready to leave shortly for New Mexico to start filming "The Avengers".  Looking forward to putting another Marvel Comics movie under my belt.
