Puoi dire ai nostri lettori come sei entrato nell'industria del cinema e come hai iniziato a fare lo stunt?

Mio zio mi introdusse nell’industria degli stunt precocemente. Ebbi la possibilità di imparare le cadute dall’alto, guidare ogni genere di giocattolo e, cosa più importante, come ricomporsi in modo professionale sul set.  

A giudicare dalle scene intraviste nel trailer, la fisicità di Thor è piuttosto brutale. Rispetto alle scene che ti hanno coinvolto, puoi dirci quanto questa brutalità sia selvaggia e quanto disciplinata?

Io la definirei brutalità selvaggia disciplinata. Abbiamo una coreografia e siamo tutti esperti, ma quanto figo può apparire un combattimento con gente messa in posa e completamente sincronizzata? Il pubblico, me compreso, vuole vedere sensazionali scene d’azioni che siano credibili. Bisogna essere un tantino rozzi con grande intensità.

Avete lavorato molto anche con i cavi? A parte il volo, Thor è un personaggio più da combattimento corpo a corpo, e non tanto atletico... non è esattamente Spider-Man, per intenderci.

Sì, per quanto riguarda la domanda sui cavi. Ne abbiamo usato di ogni tipo. Mi permetto invece di dissentire sul commento riguardo Spidey. Thor è probabilmente il personaggio più atletico. Certo, io sono di parte, ma penso tu ti stessi riferendo ad acrobatico, non atletico. Mi sono allenato con il football americano, la boxe e numerose altre attività atletiche, ma questo è nulla in confronto al body building, l’addestramento in combattimento, le prove e le riprese effettive in costume fatte per Thor. È stata dura ma ce l’abbiamo messa tutta per rappresentare un dio.

In quanti set hai lavorato per questo film? Da quanto si è visto fino ad ora si avrà una certa varietà scenografica. Cosa puoi dirci al proposito, e in particolare di Asgard? Anche a livello di impressioni, se non puoi essere più preciso.

In tutti quanti. È stato pazzesco assistere ai set che prendevano forma dall’arte concettuale e dalle pagine dei fumetti. Non vedo l’ora di ammirare ogni cosa nel suo insieme. Ogni set, ogni palcoscenico, era spettacolare e quello che non abbiamo visto era in buonissime mani.

Hai partecipato a riprese solo con la seconda unità, o hai avuto modo di vedere all'opera anche Kenneth Branagh? Nel secondo caso vuoi dirci che impressione ne hai ricevuto? E se hai lavorato solo con la seconda unità, come si procedeva? Branagh, che tu sappia, manteneva un controllo di massima a distanza?

Ero in piena attività sia sui set che con le unità. Kenneth Branagh è un vero professionista che tira fuori il meglio da ognuno. I consigli e le indicazioni che mi ha dato non li dimenticherò mai. Vic Armstrong ha diretto la seconda unità ed anche lui mi ha lasciato un ricordo indelebile. Dalle storie sulle sue avventure passate al suo istinto davanti alla telecamera; ha anche portato le mie prestazioni su di un altro livello.  

E con Chris Hemsworth hai avuto contatti? Puoi dirci qualcosa del suo approccio al personaggio?

Beh, Chris Hemsworth era la ragione per cui io stessi lavorando nel film. Abbiamo avuto l’occasione di lavorare insieme in un film precedente e a tutti e due piace il modo di essere e di lavorare dell’altro. Abbiamo continuato a sentirci ed abbiamo avuto la possibilità di lavorare insieme di nuovo per Thor. Lui è una macchina. Il suo porsi nei confronti della palestra e del fisico non conosce sosta. Quando la Marvel decise che sarebbe stato lui Thor, intraprese una ricerca personale di materiale sulla mitologia nordica, per comprendere meglio il personaggio.  Per dare vita al personaggio, ha usato i fumetti, per emulare e ricreare le pose di Thor. Il bello di tutto è che Chris ha trasformato Chris in Thor e questo è ciò che ritengo i fan non dimenticheranno.  

Sai già se sarai coinvolto anche nella lavorazione di The Avengers? E se ne hai sentito parlare, lavorando con i Marvel Studios, puoi dirci quale atmosfera circondi quel progetto?

Sì e l'atmosfera è fantastica.

Questo film ha visto all'opera un gruppo numeroso di stunt, come Ilram Choi, Kylie Furneaux. Alex Chansky e molti altri. Come ti sei trovato a lavorare con loro e come era l'affiatamento con questo gruppo?

Era la nostra squadra di stunt. Eravamo guidati dagli Armstrong e tutti noi avevamo un unico obiettivo. Tutti abbiamo lavorato diligentemente e siamo stati disponibili. È stato divertente e sarebbe uno spasso avere la possibilità di lavorare assieme ancora.

Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti?

Ho avuto la fortuna di lavorare ad un insieme di film tra Thor e gli Avengers, ma sono già al lavoro per riportare in forma il fisico per Thor negli Avengers.

 Can you tell our readers how did you get in the movie industry and how did you start as a stunt?

My uncle exposed me to the stunt industry at an early age. I was able to learn high falls, ride all kinds of toys, and most importantly how to compose myself professionally on set.

Judging the scenes in the trailer, Thor’s physicalness s rather brutal. Referring to the scenes you were involved, can you tell us how much of this brutality is savage and how much is disciplined?

I would consider it disciplined savagery. We have choreography and we are all trained, but how bad ass does a fight look with guys postured and completely in sync? People, myself included, want to see huge action that is believable. It needs to be a little rough around the edges with high intensity.

Did you work a lot with wire-cables? Flight apart, Thor is more a hand-to-hand battle character, non so athletic… it’s not quite like Spider-Man, if you know what I mean. 

Yes to all of the rigging questions. We used it all.  Agree to disagree on the spidey comment. Thor is probably the most athletic. Yes, I am biased, but I think you are referring to acrobatic not athletic. I have trained for football, boxing, and numerous other athletic activities, but all fail in comparison to the body building, fight training, rehearsals, and actual filming in the costume that we did for Thor. It was tough, we were trying our best to represent a god.

How many sets did you work on for this film? From what we have seen ‘till now there will be a certain range of sceneries. What can you tell about this, in particular Asgard? On impressions level, too.

All of them. It was wild seeing the sets bore out of the concept art and comic book pages. I am excited to see everything put together. All of the stages and sets were spectacular and anything we didn't see is in fantastic hands.

Did you take part to the shootings only with the second unit, or could you see Kenneth Branagh working? In this case, could you tell us what were your impressions? And in the first case, how was it like to work with second unit?Did Branagh keep some sort of control from afar?

I was in constant motion between both sets and units. Kenneth Branagh is a true professional that evokes everyone's inner best. The advice and guidance that he gave me will be unforgettable. Vic Armstrong directed the second unit and left a lasting impression as well. From his stories of past adventure to his insight on how to work for the camera; he also took my game to another level.

Did you come in touch with Chris Hemsworth? Can you tell us something about his approach to the character?

Yes, Chris Hemsworth was the reason that I was working on the film. We had an opportunity to work together on a past film and we both really enjoyed each others attitude and work habits. We stayed in touch and got a chance to work together again on Thor. He is a machine. He has a tireless approach to the gym and his physique. When Marvel chose to use him as Thor, he started doing his research on Norse mythology to have a better understanding of the character. As for bringing the character to life, he used comic books to match poses and recreate authentic Thor poses. The beauty of it all is that Chris brought Chris to Thor and that element is what I think fans will come back for.

Do you know if you’ll be involved in The Avengers yet? And if you have heard about it, can you tell something about the mood that surrounds that project?

Yes and excitement.

This film has had a lot of stunts working on it, as Ilram Choi, Kylie Furneaux, Alex Chansky and many others. What was it like to work alongside them and what was the harmony in the group like?

It was our stunt team. We were lead by the Armstrongs and all of us had a common goal. We all worked diligently and brought a good attitude. It was fun and I would revel in the chance to work with any of them again.
 

What are your future projects?

I had the opportunity to work on a bunch of films in between Thor and The Avengers, but I am already well on the way to getting the full Thor physique back for the Avengers.
