The Avengers - Intervista a Paul Lacovara

Vi presentiamo, in esclusiva per Comicus, una intervista a Paul Lacovara, già stuntman in Thor, che ha lavorato come controfigura di Tom Hiddleston in The Avengers, l'atteso adattamento cinematografico sul supergruppo Marvel diretto da Joss Whedon.

Hai già lavorato a Thor. Quali sono state le tue sensazioni nel prendere parte nuovamente a un film dei Marvel Studios, per giunta con un cast stellare? Come è stato tornare a lavorare con Tom Hiddleston? Ti chiede mai qualche consiglio prima di una scena?

Mi ha emozionato molto ricevere un altro incarico per un film Marvel. E il fatto che fosse per The Avengers è stato anche meglio! Sapevo che avrei rivisto molti degli stessi realizzatori e altri partecipanti dal film di Thor e non vedevo l'ora di lavorarci di nuovo assieme.  Tutti sono sempre stati molto gentili. 
Parlando invece di come è stato lavorare con tutto il cast di Avengers, è stata una grande esperienza. Molti di loro sono venuti per le prove per allenarsi nei combattimenti ed erano molto aperti e alla mano.  Davvero un gruppo di brave persone. 
Lavorare di nuovo con Tom è stato grande! Ci siamo divertiti molto durante Thor e lavorarci assieme ancora su The Avengers era davvero un sogno. Credo che abbiamo saldato la nostra amicizia il che ci ha aiutato ad evolvere la nostra coesione professionale come lavoro di squadra. Lavoriamo davvero bene insieme per rendere "Loki" al suo meglio.
Non saprei dire se Tom mi abbia mai veramente chiesto dei consigli. Tom conosce bene il suo lavoro e si presenta sempre preparato. Ci sono momenti in cui stiamo facendo uno stunt e mi chiede il miglior modo per cadere dopo aver volato in aria, in modo da non farsi male o in modo che possa continuare a lottare eccetera. Non solo Tom è un ottimo attore ma è un grandioso stuntman! É sempre pronto a buttarsi e una volta che gli hai mostrato una cosa, lui la afferra al volo. 

Come ti sei preparato per questa pellicola? Segui allenamenti particolari prima di un film di questo tipo?

Ho studiato arti marziali di continuo fin da quando ero ragazzo, il che mi ha decisamente aiutato per un film come questo, ma quando mi hanno chiamato e ho scoperto che cosa mi aspettava, ho iniziato ad allenarmi con un'arma in particolare. Vorrei anche dire quale, ma non voglio dare nessun indizio su quanto davvero pesante ci vada Loki o dire qualcosa che non dovrei. Forse verrà rivelato qualcosa di più nei prossimi trailers. Abbiamo avuto anche parecchio tempo per le prove dei combattimenti e Tom era lì a darci dentro, ogni santo giorno.

Cosa puoi dirci del regista, Joss Whedon, e del resto del cast?

Joss è stato fantastico. Sapeva davvero come dirigere una scena d'azione e tirar fuori il meglio da tutti noi. John Mahaffie, il regista della seconda unità con cui ho avuto parecchio a che fare, è stato grande anche lui. Pieno di energia ed è un vero veterano quando si tratta di girare grandi sequenze di azione. I produttori si sono sempre dimostrati molto soddisfatti e tutta la squadra in generale era della bella gente. É stata la prima volta in cui ho avuto l'opportunità di lavorare per R.A. Rondell, il coordinatore degli stunt, e non ho che da dire belle cose su di lui. É uno dei coordinatori più attenti con cui abbia lavorato ed ha sempre mantenuto un gran sangue freddo. Vorrei ce ne fossero di più come lui!

Quale è stata la sfida più complessa per te in questo film? Abbiamo visto molte immagini delle riprese a Cleveland avvenute nei mesi scorsi, e per molti erano davvero impressionanti. Quali sono le differenze tra la lavorazione di questo film e Thor?

Credo che la maggiore sfida in questo genere di film derivi da quanto eravamo impegnati. C'erano così tanti stunt! E non solo degli stunts singoli qua e là, ma delle belle, grosse scene di azione! Non c'era tempo per riposare o riprendersi.  Eravamo sempre sul vai, vai, vai! Ci sbattevano a fare allenamento in pre-produzione e prove fino alla fine.
La più grande differenza fra Thor e The Avengers, è semplicemente che siamo più esposti al pubblico. Per Thor, eravamo soprattuto sul set e le riprese in esterno che avevamo erano così isolate che non c'era nessuno in giro per miglia e miglia. Mi pare di aver visto una foto del campo base di Thor mentre eravamo in New Mexico, ma nient'altro. Per Avengers, beh, sappiamo tutti com'è finita! Centinaia e centinaia di foto e video! Eravamo davvero molto esposti, il che credo sia una buona cosa. Motiva di più la gente a vedere il film per scoprire come tutto si incastri nell'insieme, diciamo. Infatti, c'era questa scena in cui abbiamo letteralmente fatto saltare in aria un'intera strada piena di automobili, palazzi e persone. Dopo che sono finite le esplosioni e il regista ha gridato taglia, c'è stato quest'immenso frastuono da parte di almeno un migliaio di curiosi che applaudivano e gridavano! É stato davvero forte.

Nel film immagino che indossi costume ed elmetto di Loki. È difficile per te muoverti o ti sei ormai abituato? Come gestisci la cosa?

Ah già, il costume e l'elmetto di Loki; che gran piacere! Ti dico la verità, indosserei quella roba ogni santo giorno perchè adoro il personaggio ed il lavoro, ma il costume di per sè, non era esattamente piacevole. Pesava circa 16 chili ed era molto limitante con l'armatura completa. Era utile però indossare l'armatura quando dovevi schiantarti sul terreno. Non riuscivo sempre a sistemare le imbottiture sotto il costume, quindi averle già incorporate è stato utile. L'elmetto era anche quello tutta un'altra faccenda. Mi ci è voluto un po' per adattarmi perchè le corna sono molto pronunciate, ma una volta capito come muoversi e lottare tenendole su, eravamo pronti per darci dentro.

Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti? So che stai, o hai lavorato a R.I.P.D., un altro adattamento tratto da un fumetto. Ce ne puoi parlare?

Già, al momento sto facendo lo stunt per Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D. che è stato un'altra grande esperienza! Sarà un altro gran film d'azione con un sacco di personaggi forti. Sono certo che tutti ne parleranno molto presto. Non so esattamente quanto ancora se ne sappia in giro, quindi credo che per ora sarà meglio tenga i dettagli per me. 
Ci sto lavorando da settembre e dovrei finire in un paio di settimane. Quando avrò terminato, credo che tornerò a Los Angeles a passare un po' di tempo con mia moglie e mio figlio. Sono stato in giro fin dall'inizio di Avengers con cui ho cominciato ad aprile, quindi credo di essere pronto per un po' di vacanze. Non per troppo però! É dura per me starmene fermo a non far nulla. Adoro allenarmi e lavorare quindi sono certo sarò pronto per un nuovo spettacolo in una settimana o giù di lì.

Tu e Hiddleston avete per caso parlato di Thor 2?

In effetti abbiamo parlato parecchio di Thor 2! Ma è tutto quello che posso dire!

You already worked on Thor. What were your feelings taking part of another movie from Marvel Studios, with such an important cast? What was it like working with Tom Hiddleston again? Does he ever ask you for advice before a scene?

I felt very excited to get the call to work on another Marvel film.  The fact that it was for The Avengers was a huge thrill!  I knew I would be seeing many of the same producers and other crew from Thor and was looking forward to working with them again.  Everyone was always so nice. 
In terms of working with the entire cast of Avengers; it was a great experience.  Most of them came into rehearsals for fight training and were really open and down to earth.  --Just a group of really good people. 
Working with Tom again was great!  We had a fantastic time on Thor and to get to work together again on The Avengers was dream.  I think we solidified our friendship which helped us evolve our cohesiveness as a team professionally.  We really work well together to help "Loki" be his best.
I don't know if Tom asks me for advice, per say.  Tom really knows his stuff and comes prepared.  There are instances however when we are doing a stunt and he may ask the best way to land after flying through the air, so as to not injure himself or so he's able to continue fighting etc.  Not only is Tom a good actor but he is a hell of a stuntman!  He's always ready to throw down and once you show him something, he's got it and nails it. 

How did you prepare for this film? You follow any particular training before this kind of movie?

I've studied martial arts off and on since I was a boy, which definitely helps me for a movie such as this, but when I got the call for this film, I found out what we had coming up and really started training with one weapon in particular.  I'd say which one it is, but don't want to give any hints as to how badass Loki really is or say anything I'm not supposed to. Perhaps more will be revealed through upcoming trailers.  We also had quite a bit of rehearsal time for our fights and Tom was there kicking ass, day in and day out.

What can you tell us about the director, Joss Whedon, and the rest of the crew?

Joss was great.  He really new how to direct the action and get the best out of us. John Mahaffie, the second unit director, with whom I had quite a bit of interaction was amazing too. --Very energetic and is a true vet when it comes to shooting great action sequences.  The producers were always very complimentary and the crew in general was just a good group of people.  This was the first time I had the opportunity to work for R.A. Rondell, the stunt coordinator, and have nothing but nice things to say about the guy.  He is one of the safest coordinators I have worked with and always kept his cool under pressure.  I wish there were more like him!

What was the hardest challenge for you during this movie? We saw many pictures from the shootings in Cleveland during the last months, and for many they were quite impressive. What are the differences between the making of this movie and Thor?

I think the biggest challenge for many on this film was how busy we were.  There are so many stunts!  And not just single stunts here and there, but rather, huge action sequences!  There was no time for rest of recovery.  It was always go, go, go!  We were slammed starting with pre-production training and rehearsals 'til the very end.
The biggest difference between Thor and The Avengers, was simply us being more exposed to the public.  On Thor, we were mainly on stage and the locations we did have were so secluded that there was no one around for miles and miles.  I think I did see one picture of Thor's base camp while we were in New Mexico, but that was it.  On Avengers, well, we all know how that turned out!  Hundreds and hundreds of photos and videos!  There was really a vast amount of exposure, which I think is a good thing.  It gets people pumped up to see the movie and they want to see how it all fits into the big picture, so to speak.  In fact, there was one sequence where we literally blew up and entire street which was full of cars, buildings and people.  After the explosions went off and the director yelled cut, there was this huge roar from at least a thousand onlookers applauding and cheering!  It was actually kind of cool.

I guess you got to wear Loki costume and helmet during the movie. Was it hard for you to move around or you got used to it? How do you manage it?

Ah yes, the Loki costume and helmet; such a joy!  I tell you what, I will wear that thing everyday because I love the character and the work, but the wardrobe itself, wasn't the most pleasant.  It weighed about 35 pounds or so and was quite restricting with the armor applied.  It was handy however to have that armor when crashing to the ground.  I couldn't always fit pads underneath the wardrobe, so to have it built in was nice.  The helmet was a something else as well.  It took a little adapting because the horns are so pronounced, but once we figured out how to move and fight with it, we were ready to rock.

What are your next projects? I know you've been working for R.I.P.D., another comics movie adaptation. Can you tell us something about it?

Yeah, I'm currently doubling Ryan Reynolds on R.I.P.D. which has been another great experience!  This is going to be another great action movie with a lot of cool characters.  I am sure everyone will be talking about it soon.  I am not sure what information is out there already, so I think I have to keep quiet about the details for now. 
I've been on here since September and am set to wrap in a couple weeks.  When I finish here, I think I am heading back to LA and am going to spend some good quality time with my wife and son.  I've been on the road since the beginning of Avengers which was in April, so I think I'm ready for a little vacation.  --Not too long though!  It is hard for me to just sit and relax and do nothing.  I love training and working so I  am sure I'll be ready for another show within a week or so.

Have you and Hiddleston ever talked about Thor 2?

We have talked about Thor 2 quite a bit actually!  But that's all I can say!
