Quando, e come, è partito il progetto che ha portato alla realizzazione di questa nuova serie?

Dopo aver accettato di produrre una proprietà del catalogo Marvel, i produttori hanno reciprocamente approvato una versione degli X-Men in cui Wolverine fosse protagonista. Da lì è cominciata la fase dello sviluppo letterario, sotto la direzione del direttore creativo e dei produttori della First Serve Toonz, insieme allo story editor Greg Johnson.

C'è un qualche collegamento tra questo nuovo cartoon e le precedenti serie animate sui mutanti Marvel?

In termini di storia, la serie è a sé stante, sebbene alcuni legami tra certi personaggi siano rivelati in questa serie e non in altre serie o film. L’intento era quello di tornare stilisticamente allo spirito della prima serie animata trasmessa dalla Fox nei primi anni ’90, in cui le storie e i personaggi seguivano strettamente la tradizione letteraria.

Da quel che si è potuto vedere dai trailer, la serie inizia immediatamente con un vero e proprio cliffhanger. Che risvolti avrà questo tragico prologo sui personaggi della serie?

Infatti, la serie comincia col botto, preparando la scena per l’imminente guerra tra gli X-Men e la Confraternita, con i protagonisti della serie alla ricerca di un significato nelle loro vite, mentre si riuniscono a seguito della misteriosa scomparsa del Professor X. Tutti i personaggi dovranno sviluppare responsabilità e capire la propria importanza per il genere umano. Su tutti, starà a Wolverine assumere il comando e vestire i panni del loro mentore, fino a quando non troveranno un modo per riportarlo indietro.

Chi si è occupato della caratterizzazione grafica dei vari personaggi e quali direttive (suggerimenti e/o limitazioni) avete avuto dalla Marvel stessa?

La produzione ha lavorato a stretto contatto con i referenti della Marvel, consentendole di essere coinvolta ad ogni passo dello sviluppo e della produzione della serie. La serie è stata prodotta e realizzata dalla Kickstart Entertainment e dalla Toonz India, insieme al top degli artisti americani della Toonz, con l’animazione fatta in Sud Corea e Giappone.

Che tipo di storie e di atmosfere dobbiamo aspettarci?

Poichè gli episodi saranno caratterizzati da azione, ritmo serrato e atmosfere piuttosto dark, il tentativo degli X-Men di riunirsi, la loro prima battaglia con Magneto e la Confraternita, lo sviluppo individuale dei personaggi a seguito della perdita del Professor X farà da contraltare emotivo.

Le singole puntate saranno strettamente autoconclusive, o è previsto un subplot generale che legherà le storie delle singole puntate?

Gli episodi avranno uno sviluppo orizzontale con una evoluzione della storia che continuerà per tutta la stagione; tuttavia, anche individuali storilines verticali faranno parte di molti episodi.

Quali saranno le maggiori differenze tra questo progetto animato e le serie a fumetti da cui prende spunto?

Chi segue i fumetti sa che Wolverine è un leader molto improbabile per gli X-Men, visto che ha sempre agito al di fuori delle loro regole, mentre logicamente sarebbe Ciclope a prendere il comando. In questa serie abbiamo Wolverine come un capo incerto, che sviluppa le qualità da leader strada facendo, mentre tenta di riportare un “Ciclope distrutto” all’ovile. Rimaniamo contemporaneamente molto fedeli alla concezione dei personaggi del fumetto, ma cerchiamo nuove strade attraverso trame che permettono più conflitti e dramma di quello a cui i fan sono abituati. I nuovi fan potranno godere gli X-Men in un nuovo modo, con un ribelle come leader e uno story-arc che ci porta dal caos all’ordine.

A che target puntate?

Ai ragazzi tra gli 8 e i 14 anni, armonizzandoli con il livello dei fan adolescenti. Manteniamo i contenuti fruibili dai giovanissimi, senza negargli la drammaticità che ha fatto del film degli X-Men un successo presso lo stesso target.

When and how did the project for this new series start?

After agreeing to produce a key property from the Marvel catalogue, the producers mutually agreed upon a version of the X-Men in which Wolverine would take the center stage. From there, the literary development phase began under the direction of First ServeToonz producers and creative director, working alongside story editor Greg Johnson.

Is there any connection between this new cartoon and the previous Marvel Mutants animated series?

In terms of story, this series stands independently, although new connections between certain characters are revealed in this series which don't come to light in any other series or movies. The intent was to stylistically return to the spirit of the first animated series aired on Fox in the early 90's, in which the stories and characters followed the literary tradition closely.

As it seems from the trailers, the series begins immediately with a real cliffhanger. What kind of consequences will this tragic prologue have on the series characters?

Indeed, the series starts with a bang setting the scene for the upcoming war between the X-Men and the brotherhood leaving the series protagonists struggling to look for meaning in their lives as X-Men and reunite following the mysterious disappearance of Professor X. All characters will need to grow responsibility and understand their importance for mankind; above all, it will be up to Wolverine to take charge and fill their mentors shoes, until they can find a way to bring him back.

Who was responsible for the graphic definition of the various characters and what directives did you receive from Marvel?

The production worked naturally very close with its contacts at Marvel, allowing Marvel to be involved in every step of the development and production of the series. The series itself has been produced/designed by Kickstart Entertainment and Toonz India, with top U.S. action/adventure artists and key artists from Toonz, with the animation work having been located in South Korea and Singapore.

What kind of stories and atmosphere are we going to experience?

Whereas the episodes will feature an action-packed, fast-paced and rather dark atmosphere throughout the series, the X-Men’s efforts to reunite, their fight against Magneto and the Brotherhood and thus the characters individual development following the loss of Professor X will act as emotional counterweight.

Will the episodes be self-standing or there will be a general subplot relating all of them?

The episodes will be told in a horizontal fashion with an ongoing story development over the season; notwithstanding, individual vertical story lines will also be part of most episodes.

What will be the main differences between this project and the comic series it inspires to?

If one follows the original comic books, we know that Wolverine is a very unlikely leader for the X-Men, since he operated outside of their rules, while logically Cyclops would take control. In this series, we have Wolverine as an uncertain leader, who develops leadership qualities along the way, while trying to bring a "destroyed Cyclops" back into the fold again. We simultaneously remain very faithful to the overall treatment of the characters in the comic series, but break new ground through plot constructs that allow for more character conflict and drama that major fans haven't seen before. New fans will be able to experience the X-Men in a new way, with a rebel as its leader and a story arc that brings us from chaos to order.

What is your reference target?

We are targeting the boys’ audience between 8 and 14, harmonizing to the college-level comic book fans. We keep the content suitable for the teen/twen audience, without denying them the drama that made the X-Men movies a big hit among the very same target.
